  Sarah has always had a love for dog training, but took it to the next level when her believed lab cross Seamus developed fear towards other dogs and people. This lead Sarah towards learning more about dog behaviour and started her down the path to become a dog trainer.

  After completing a Certificate IV in Companion Animal Services, she started Happy Tails Dog Training Tasmania. Along with group classes and private training, she also works with a number of assistance dog organisations such as mindDOG and Care Dogs and Co (Tas).

  She lives with her deaf Border Collie Jack who is chief treat tester and always up to test out new enrichment ideas.

  She is secretary of the Pet Professional Guild Australia Committee and is passionate about providing educational content for pet owners.

  Some animals’ problem behaviour don’t respond to training alone. Some require medications but which ones are suitable?

  This talk will discuss medications commonly prescribed for behaviour problems in companion animals.

  
  

  Learning Objectives  

  • Psychotropic medications are being used with greater frequency in companion animal populations to help animals with mental health disorders.
  • While they are very safe medications, they are not benign. The risks are not insignificant.
  • The diagnosis and recommendations of medications for animals is a veterinarian’s responsibility.
  • There’s more to diagnosing and prescribing of meds, we will go into more detail as to why trainers should not diagnose or recommend
  • Work with your local vets or others not against them, keeping in mind their chemistry is better than yours.
  • Best practice- recommend the owner discuss the issue with their veterinarian.

  Dr Jacqui Ley

  BVSc(Hons) PhD DECAWBM FANZCVS(Veterinary Behaviour)

  Registered Specialist in Veterinary Behavioural Medicine

  Dr Jacqui Ley was the inaugural Hills TM Resident in Veterinary Behavioural Medicine.  She graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1995 and worked in companion animal practice in metropolitan Melbourne.  While studying, she recognised veterinary behavioural medicine as an area that brought together her interests in animal behaviour, animal training and the functioning brain.  She obtained her membership to the Veterinary Behaviour Chapter of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists (ANZCVS) in 2000.  Dr Ley completed her PhD, through Monash University, describing a model and building a questionnaire for assessing canine personality.  She has also described the factors that affect the relationships between an owner and their dog.  Other research interests include the human-animal bond and factors affecting this, tests for measuring fear and other behaviours in dogs and the social relationships in dogs and cats.  She was a tutor for the Graduate Certificate in Animal Welfare at Monash University. 

  In 2011 she became a diplomat of the European College of Animal Welfare and Behavioural Medicine - one of two people to hold this qualification in Australia.  Jacqui was awarded a Fellowship to the ANZCVS in the Chapter of Veterinary Behaviour at Science Week 2013. 

  She currently is the chair of the Advisory Committee for the Delta Institute, helping shape the course for future dog trainers. She is part of the team that presents the Veterinary Behaviour Course for the Centre of Veterinary Education at Sydney University.

  She sees cases at the Melbourne Veterinary Specialist Centre, lectures on topics in Veterinary Psychiatry and acts as an expert witness in legal cases involving dogs and animal behaviour.

  Like so many educators, inappropriate behaviour got me hooked on understanding why some individuals flourish in one setting and others don’t.  Initially this fascination started within school classrooms and policy changes but later moved to anti-social behaviour in dogs. 

  Like any good education systems there needs to be guiding principles and rightly it should be about the student.  

  Students whether human or four pawed, engage best when they feel safe , valued , have choices  not just in what to do or what to work towards but  in also being allowed  to opt out.

  I do think that an animal that is calmer is enriched. An animal that is an active and engaged partner in learning is enriched. An animal with a healthy relationship with their handler is enriched. 

  Like any good educator, you can only get better by being available to the learner and their needs and being open to work hard ,searching  and collaborating  with others for answers.

  Barbara Hodel

  In 2015 I completed my Diploma in Canine Behaviour Science and Technology at the Companion Animal Sciences Institute in Canada. But I have been involved in dog training for the last 20 years and completed a Certificate IV in Companion Animal Services as a Delta-accredited instructor in 2007. I have been running Goodog Positive Dog Training on the Northern Beaches Sydney for the last 15 years, running classes on all levels as well as workshops and agility fun classes. We also do in home consultations for problem behaviours.

  I compete on master level in Agility and Rally O with Shellbe my 10 year old German Shorthaired Pointer. My young dog Chillax is just starting out and has gained his Rally Novice title in 2019 but he is still a real teenager.

  I am the president of the Pet Professional Guild Australia and a registered breeder with Dogs NSW.

  My first book: How to Love – And Survive – Our Teenage Dogs was published in July 2020

  I had a life before dogs and hold a Master's Degree in Modern European History and Economics from the University of Bern (Switzerland) and a MBA (Master of Business Administration) from Southern Cross University Australia. I have in-depth experience in adult education and training, having taught high school and university students in Bern, college students in Sydney, as well as middle and top management employees of a large public corporation in Switzerland.

  It is hard to believe that deaf dogs are still being euthanised, surrendered and refused entry to regular training classes simply because they’re deaf. There is widespread public perception that deaf dogs are more likely to be anxious or aggressive and that training deaf dogs is more difficult than training hearing dogs. Although, training deaf dogs is a little different, it is no more difficult or risky than training hearing dogs.

  Dr Natalie Rogers is a full-time academic and dog trainer. She has an undergraduate degree in Psychology and Zoology with Honours in Biological Science, and a PhD in Biological Science.

  For her doctoral research, Natalie utilised neuroimaging and the research methods of psychology to investigate complex behavioural sequences of humans, hominins and non-human animals. Natalie has taught biology and psychology at the University of New South Wales (Sydney, Australia) since 2010 and currently lectures on anxiety, stress, mental illness, animal learning and comparative psychology.

  Natalie has completed a Diploma of Canine Behavior Science and Technology, specialising in Aggressive Behaviour, through the Companion Animal Sciences Institute, as well as the Pro Dog Trainer and PDT Geek certificates through Absolute Dogs. She is an accredited member of APDT Australia and a proud member of the PPGA.

  There are many stories reported in the media about the beneficial effects of pet ownership, but existing scientific evidence is mixed. Some research has indeed shown that pet ownership is associated with improved mental and physical health outcomes, but other studies have shown no effect, or even a negative effect – that is, having a pet is associated with WORSE health outcomes. How can we make sense of this mixed evidence? What is the underlying factor that may be explaining why these results are inconsistent? This talk will describe the existing evidence base, including limitations and gaps, as well as a potential explanation for the mixed results: human social support.

  Tiffani is a Senior Research Fellow in the School of Psychology and Public Health at La Trobe University. She has extensive experience in research on animal welfare, dog-owner relationships, and assistance dogs, including surveys, focus groups, and behavioural studies.

  She recently completed a four-year trial, funded by the Australian Department of Veterans’ Affairs, to understand the effectiveness of assistance dogs as an adjunct to treatment for veterans with PTSD. She has also jointly led a project commissioned by the National Disability Insurance Agency, in which existing scientific literature was reviewed to determine the effectiveness of assistance dogs.

  Other recently completed projects include understanding the benefits and disadvantages of owner-trained assistance dogs, general public awareness of assistance dog public access rights, whether social interactions within the community increase when people with an intellectual disability go on outings with a therapy dog, and the impact of courtroom dogs for survivors of sexual and family violence.

  Adriana Milne is a qualified force free dog trainer. Born in Brazil and she has lived here since 1988. She holds a Certificate IV Companion Animal Services – Delta Society Australia.

  She started Pet Pals in 2001 and for 15 years offered pet sitting/ dog walking services – individual & small groups around the Kingston/ Frankston/ Bayside areas of Melbourne.  In 2009 she added dog training to her business offering puppy & pet dog classes and since 2020 she has focused in Dog Training Consultations, Behavioural Modification consultancy and puppy, junior puppy, adolescent & adult dogs one on one sessions. She enjoys working with her clients and their dog at their own level.

  She has used and taught classes at several dog day care centres, vet clinics, and Dogs Victoria in Melbourne.

In this presentation, we discuss some thoughtful ways to evaluate research articles, with lots of interesting examples. Drawing on my own experience publishing in this field, this session will look at the difficulties that can be encountered when trying to perform the perfect study.

  * Understanding the importance of statistics (even without understanding statistics itself)

  * Learning how correlation is not equal to causation, and other misinterpretations of data

  Dr Dennis Wormald earned his Bachelor of Veterinary Science and PhD on canine anxiety from the University of Melbourne, Australia. He also has a biomedical science degree with a neuroscience major, and research experience in addiction neuroscience at the Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health. Dennis is also a member by examination of the Veterinary Behaviour Chapter of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists.

  Dennis enjoys working as a veterinarian doing private veterinary referral behaviour consulting for dogs in Melbourne, Australia. He is also the founder of ABAdog, an online dog behaviour education business. This startup currently services over 50 veterinary clinics across Australia, providing custom dog behaviour advice for their patients. Recently, Dennis has published his first book on dog behaviour, titled "A Dedication To Difficult Dogs"
