        Presented by Dr Natalie Rogers

It is hard to believe that deaf dogs are still being euthanised, surrendered and refused entry to regular training classes simply because they’re deaf. There is widespread public perception that deaf dogs are more likely to be anxious or aggressive and that training deaf dogs is more difficult than training hearing dogs. Although, training deaf dogs is a little different, it is no more difficult or risky than training hearing dogs.

The purpose of this webinar is to help empower trainers and guardians, giving them theoretical knowledge and practical training strategies to enable them to confidently work with deaf dogs.

        Learning Objectives

             Attendees will learn:

        * How mammals hear and why deafness occurs in dogs (congenital and presbycusis)
        * How to establish a marker system with a deaf dog
        * Selecting and teaching effective visual and tactile cues
        * Alternatives to an “attention noise”
        * Tips for keeping deaf dogs safe

Is the 'pet effect' real? What the science really says.

                    Presented by Tiffani Howell

There are many stories reported in the media about the beneficial effects of pet ownership, but existing scientific evidence is mixed. Some research has indeed shown that pet ownership is associated with improved mental and physical health outcomes, but other studies have shown no effect, or even a negative effect – that is, having a pet is associated with WORSE health outcomes. How can we make sense of this mixed evidence? What is the underlying factor that may be explaining why these results are inconsistent? This talk will describe the existing evidence base, including limitations and gaps, as well as a potential explanation for the mixed results: human social support.

                    Learning Objectives

The pet effect may be real, but the scientific evidence is not conclusive.

Limitations in existing research may help explain the mixed results.

A pet owner’s relationships with other humans may be the bigger determinant for whether they will benefit from having a pet

                        About The Presenter

Tiffani is a Senior Research Fellow in the School of Psychology and Public Health at La Trobe University. She has extensive experience in research on animal welfare, dog-owner relationships, and assistance dogs, including surveys, focus groups, and behavioural studies.

She recently completed a four-year trial, funded by the Australian Department of Veterans’ Affairs, to understand the effectiveness of assistance dogs as an adjunct to treatment for veterans with PTSD. She has also jointly led a project commissioned by the National Disability Insurance Agency, in which existing scientific literature was reviewed to determine the effectiveness of assistance dogs.

Other recently completed projects include understanding the benefits and disadvantages of owner-trained assistance dogs, general public awareness of assistance dog public access rights, whether social interactions within the community increase when people with an intellectual disability go on outings with a therapy dog, and the impact of courtroom dogs for survivors of sexual and family violence.

Critical evaluation of scientific literature is an important skill, especially in the field of animal behaviour. In this presentation, we discuss some thoughtful ways to evaluate research articles, with lots of interesting examples. Drawing on my own experience publishing in this field, this session will look at the difficulties that can be encountered when trying to perform the perfect study.

                        Learning Objectives

Exploring the role of science in dog behaviour, with entertaining examples that cover the following points:

                        * Understanding the importance of statistics (even without understanding statistics itself)

                        * Learning how correlation is not equal to causation, and other misinterpretations of data

                        * Discovering why “not enough subjects in the study” is not necessarily a valid  criticism

                                About The Presenter

My passion for animals became apparent at an early age, as I found myself deeply empathizing with them even before I could articulate it. According to my mother, I exhibited sensitivity towards fictional animal characters on television, shedding tears whenever they faced adversity, a trait that manifested when I was merely an infant.

Growing up, my father's love for animals further nurtured my affinity. He often recounts amusing anecdotes from his own childhood, including a memorable incident where he covertly harboured a horse in the family garage to avoid relinquishing it to his mother. Another memorable story involves rescuing an injured eagle from the roadside, only to witness its majestic attempt to spread its wings within the confines of our car.

Accompanied by my father, I ventured to the local pound to adopt a canine companion in my youth. Despite my inclination towards the most unkempt and spirited dog in the shelter, my father exercised practicality, and we settled for a delightful mixed breed. However, my fondness for dogs persisted, culminating in the cherished companionship of a black Labrador puppy bestowed upon me at the age of four. Through the years, I've shared my life with many dogs, yet it's my enduring bond with my black Labrador, Keetah, that brings me back to my roots as I approach my sixtieth year.

In 2008, my journey into understanding and appreciating dogs on a deeper level began when I volunteered to raise a puppy for Guide Dogs. This experience ignited a quest for knowledge, leading me to enrol in Animal Health and Animal Behaviour courses with ACS Distance Education, where I excelled with high distinctions. Although life circumstances interrupted my completion of the Delta course, my passion for understanding canine behaviour remained unwavering.

Following the loss of my beloved canine companion, Harley, in 2015, I sought solace in fostering dogs for a local assistance dog organization. However, I felt compelled to explore gentler approaches to training, which led me to discover Canine Principles, an esteemed English institution. Subsequently, I earned a Canine Communication Diploma with Distinction, an Advanced Certificate in Canine Reactive Behaviour, and numerous other certifications.

Actively engaged in Force and Fear-Free communities, including Canine Principles, National Institute of Canine Ethics, and the Pet Professionals Network, among others, I am committed to promoting ethical and humane practices in canine training.

My dedication to advancing my knowledge and skills led me to Sarah Fisher and Animal Centred Education two years ago. Enthralled by Sarah's innovative freework methodology, I embarked on a rigorous study program, completing Module 1 and the Dog Detective course and the theoretical component of Module 2. In April, I am scheduled to travel to the UK to finalize the practical segment of Module 2. Meeting Sarah in person at the APDT Australia conference last year was a personal milestone, and I am honoured to be appointed as the unofficial ACE representative in Australia by Sarah herself. With aspirations to achieve full accreditation as an ACE instructor within the coming year, I integrate ACE freework principles into all my training endeavours, whether with pet dogs or assistance dog trainees.

At present, I have my own business Paw & Order Noosa.

I work with Pet Dogs and work alongside Assistance Paws and MindDogs as a trainer of Assistance Dog trainees and their handlers.

                                Canine Co-operative Care

                                Presented by Dr Natalie Rogers

Animal husbandry can be one of the most stressful tasks for a dog, the dog guardian and veterinary care professionals. When you train with a dog to develop consent behaviours you give the dog the ability to actively engage with their husbandry. This creates a safer and lower stress environment where the dog is a willing participant in their care.

Low Stress Dog Grooming in the Salon and Home

                                Presented by Emma Cook

For all dogs, a level of regular grooming is a requirement for their health and well-being. For some, this may simply be bathing and nail trimming; for others, it may involve clipping, scissoring and extensive brushing. Unfortunately, many dogs find this process difficult to some degree and as a result, may experience high levels of stress or show undesirable behaviours which can be dangerous to both themselves and those who are grooming them.

In this webinar, Emma Cook will explore how we can utilise a low-stress handling approach and environment during grooming to increase the safety and welfare for all involved. She will discuss some common problems that may arise during the grooming session and how to address them, as well as how to get pet guardians on board with the low-stress grooming process. Understanding how to utilise low-stress grooming procedures will make sessions less of a chore and more of a bonding experience between caregiver and dog - something many groomers and guardians have only ever dreamed of.

                                - Increasing safety for both dogs and groomers in the salon

For our anxious, reactive or stressed dogs training and behaviour work is essential. But it’s just one piece of the puzzle.

Trying to train dogs that are mentally and emotionally exhausted is often futile and it’s these foundations that need to be set before we start getting stuck into the nitty gritty of training and behaviour change.

Is My Dog Normal? Or Just Plain Weird?

                                            Presented by Sarah Rutten

(author of The Canine Perspective: Using Force Free Methods to Unleash Your Dog's Pawtential)

Have you ever wondered if your dog is….well…normal? They do the weirdest things after all. The fact is, dogs do dog things. They are dogs, after all. But sometimes I think we humans forget that the furry 4-legged family member we share our lives with is a completely different species with needs and wants that differ greatly to our own.

In this webinar, we’re going take a look at what behaviours are “normal” based on a dog’s breed and age (and just the mere fact that they’re dogs!), and what isn’t. Get an insight into what’s “normal” for your dog, and for dogs in general.

This webinar builds on the chapter by the same name in my book “The Canine Perspective: Using Force-Free Methods to Unleash Your Dog’s Pawtential”.

If you're a dog owner, you will not want to miss this one!
